When you sit down in a stylist’s chair, one of the most helpful things you can do is be honest about your hair history. Even if it has been months—or years—since your last color service, what has been done to your hair can affect what is possible today.

Your stylist needs to know when your hair was last colored, what was used, and whether any of it was done at home. This information helps them understand how your hair may react to color, lightener, or other chemical services and allows them to create a plan that protects the health and integrity of your hair.

When Was Your Hair Last Colored?

Try to give your stylist an approximate date or timeframe. Let them know if you had professional color, highlights, balayage, vivid color, a gloss, or another chemical service.

Even color that has grown out can still be present in the hair. Your stylist may be working with several different areas of hair—natural, previously colored, lightened, or processed—and each can respond differently.

Yes—tell your stylist! There is no judgment.

Box color is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is important information for your stylist to have. Different at-home color products can contain different types and concentrations of color and other ingredients, and your stylist cannot always tell what is in the hair simply by looking at it.

The same goes for color-depositing shampoos, temporary colors, henna or plant-based color, color removers, and other products you may have used at home.

Don’t Leave Out the Details

It can be tempting to leave out an at-home color because you think it was a long time ago or because you are worried your stylist will be upset. But knowing the complete history is much more helpful than trying to guess what is happening underneath the surface.

Your stylist isn’t there to judge what you’ve done to your hair. They’re there to work with what you have now.

Being upfront about your hair history gives your stylist the information they need to choose the right products, determine what your hair can safely handle, and set realistic expectations for your service.

Your Hair Has a History—Share It!

Before your appointment, think back to the last few color or chemical services you’ve had. If you’re not sure exactly what product was used, that’s okay. Tell your stylist what you remember.

Honesty about your hair history helps your stylist give you the best possible service—and keeps the health of your hair the priority.
